About the Artist

Zaim Durulaman (1966) started to sketch comics for personal collection during his secondary school years. His passion for painting and becoming an illustrator had him enrolled at Institut Teknologi MARA (now UiTM) 1984-1988, majoring in Graphic Design. Upon graduation, he worked as a graphic designer for two years before becoming a full-time freelance illustrator.

It was not after 1996 that he began his illustrious career in fine arts, won several painting competitions. With four successful solo exhibitions, he also participated in group exhibitions locally and abroad, often invited to the symposium as a colony artist with a short residency in Macedonia, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Turkey and so on. In 2013, he went to pursue Master Degree in Fine Arts Technology at UiTM. Furthermore, fine arts students often use his works as reference. Currently he is a lecturer at Universiti Selangor (UNISEL).

After almost three decades of being as an artist, producing realistic and semi-realistic works, now Zaim is creating more impressive artworks which is an abstract expression. He is looking for self-satisfaction in the work of art that is going through his state of mind.

I purposely challenged my mind to explore colors through the forms of composition even though it looked ambiguous. During the executions process, each brushstroke is colored just according to the state of mind. Unlike realist, this kind of artworks is difficult to anticipate how the result looked like. There are times when the entire surface of the canvas has been colored and looks like it has been completed, but due to conflict of internal feeling, the work than being added with various colors to become unexpectedly result.

The excitement of creating an artwork is when producing it, while the most satisfaction is when being able to determine that has been completed which is decisions are very difficult to make.
